About Calypso
Calypso Michelet is a French costume and set designer currently based in New York City.
She studied literature and performing Arts in Paris and specialized in architecture and costume building.
After gaining experience in renowned shops such as the Paris Opera Garnier and the New York Theater Workshop, she moved to the United States to train as a designer at the Graduate School of the University of Massachusetts.
Her interest in reflecting on social conflicts and her flair for building dramatic tension led her to design a great number of tragedies and modern plays.
She is passionate about travel, literature, and classical music. You’ll often find her backpacking around the world or singing Opera during fittings. Her interest in education has led her to teach costume design classes and workshops, as well as write and illustrate children's books.
Calypso is currently working as Associate costume designer for the Theatro Dell'Opera Di Roma (Italy), Spoleto Festival (SC), and assistant designer for the Houston Grand Opera (TX).

Calypso Michelet est une costumière-scénoraphe qui aime parcourir le monde pour participer à diverses productions artistiques.
Ses études de Littérature et Arts du spectacle l'ont conduite à se spécialiser dans les arts de la scène en suivant notamment un programme d'architecture aux ateliers des Beaux-Arts de Paris et en obtenant un DMA de costumier-réalisateur, ainsi qu'un master de costumière-scénographe aux Etats-Unis.
Son travail se centre avant tout autour de réflections socio-politiques cotemporaines et sur la manière dont le théâtre peut réveler ces enjeux.
Calypso est passionnée par les voyages, la littérature et la musique classique, et vous pourrez souvent l'entendre fredonner des grands tubes d'opéra pendant qu'elle prépare un essayage ou travaille sur une maquette.
Son interêt pour l'éducation l'a également ammené à enseigner la conception de costumes à l'université, ainsi qu'à écrire et illustrer des contes pour enfants.
Récemment, elle a travaillée comme costumière associée pour le ballet "Closer On the Other Side" de Benjamin Millepied au Theatro Dell'Opera Di Roma (Italie), l'opéra "Ruinous Gods" au Spoleto Festival (Caroline du Sud), et "Il Trovatore" au Houston Grand Opera (Texas).
